Types of Mechanical Engineers

Mechanical engineering is a branch of engineering. It is the broadest largest and oldest of all the others in the engineering discipline, and generally known as the mother of engineering. It focuses on design, development and understanding of mechanical things

Its origins focused on the purely mechanical, like the development of machines, but with time evolved to a broad discipline which touches on many other areas of engineering. A mechanical engineer is capable of designing, building, testing and producing any device or machine. From integrated circuits to robots, to power stations and race car, the discipline is on the radical stage of technology.

Mechanical engineering is a big and varied subject with these sub-disciplines:

Types of Mechanical Engineering

Acoustical engineering – the engineers manipulate and control vibrations, and work on minimizing unnecessary sounds in any process or system.

Aerospace engineering – this type deals with design and construction of aircraft.

Manufacturing engineering – these engineers deal with study and analysis of various manufacturing practices. It handles research and development of machine tools, machines, parts, systems, processes, products and processes.

Thermal engineering – it deals with heating and cooling processes, equipment or environment. The engineers are taught to maintain any system at most favourable conditions or temperature.

Production engineering – engineers in this speciality handle tools and techniques used by manufacturing industries.

Vehicle engineering (automotive and naval architecture engineering) – engineers here deal with studies related to design, manufacture and functioning of systems that run and control vehicles.

All these different specialization in mechanical engineering can be classified under 6 discrete types of mechanical engineers based on the individual’s knowledge and skills.

Types of Mechanical Engineers

Design engineers – these engineers control or are the engine of mechanical engineering. They are concerned with formation of mechanical systems and come up with designs that meet particular requirements. They are proficient in CAD {computer-aided design} software programs and capable of taking a design from theoretical sketch through a fully developed machine drawing to a solid model animation of mechanical systems.

Manufacturing engineers – they take the designs formulated by design engineers and develop a manufacturing processes and equipment to produce the designed product. They aim at balancing production quality with the cost of production and time.

Analysis engineers – they take the concept designed by design engineer and try to understand their performance. They make use of several software tools to assess the mechanical designs, as well as fluid dynamics modelling systems, finite element analysis and other simulation products in order to determine the behaviour of the design under normal and extreme working conditions.

Testing engineers – part of what they do is the same as what an analysis engineer does, the difference being that they focus on evaluating the actual product performance contrary to digital representation of the product. They possess an intimate understanding of data, acquisition system, sensors, development of test fixtures and design of experiments so as to characterize the product performance accurately under normal and extreme conditions.

Management – these are managers with engineering background and therefore perfectly understand each team member functions. They manage design, development and manufacture process, including making decisions on crucial maters.

Engineering professors – these engineers are mostly found in schools {colleges and universities}, and teach bachelor and master degree students in mechanical engineering. They possess advanced degree in specialities like fluid and thermal dynamics. Many also act as consultants {on a contract basis} to industries on various projects or author engineering books.
